Dangote Cement has awarded scholarships to 50 students from Oworo District in Kogi State, expanding a scheme previously limited to its host communities.
At a ceremony in Obajana on Monday, Plant Director Azad Nawabuddin said the beneficiaries would be supported through their academic programmes, provided they maintain satisfactory performance.
The company said the initiative, which includes 26 female and 24 male students, was developed in collaboration with the Oworo Development Association and other local stakeholders. It is part of its Corporate Social Responsibility commitments under a Community Development Agreement.
Beyond scholarships, officials said Dangote Cement had recently provided boreholes in five Oworo communities to address water shortages.
The Kogi State Ministry of Education, represented by Acting Permanent Secretary Omolayo Bilkisu, welcomed the support, describing it as a model of public-private partnership in education.
Community leaders, including the Olu of Apata, Oba Frederick Balogun, stated that the scheme would alleviate the financial burden on families and encourage more young people to remain in school.
