Edo Probes Claims Teachers Made to Cut Grass in Schools

The Edo State Government has launched an investigation into reports that some teachers were instructed to carry out menial maintenance work, including cutting grass in schools.

The probe follows allegations from a civil society group that the Ministry of Education directed teachers to take on such tasks, raising concerns about the treatment of educators.

Education Commissioner Paddy Iyamu confirmed the inquiry, saying the government discourages practices that undermine teachers’ dignity. He said preliminary information suggested the exercise may have been voluntary, but stressed that the matter would be thoroughly investigated.

Iyamu emphasised that teachers’ duties should remain focused on classroom learning rather than menial labour.
