Alhaji Aliko Dangote, the President of Dangote Group, has taken over the proposed construction of a 250-bed ultramodern hostel estimated at N1.1 billion at the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN).
The hostel was initially meant to be constructed by the Ilorin Central Jumma’at Mosque. However, the African richest man has now resolved to take over the project from the mosque’s management.
The facility, initiated by Ilorin Central Jumma’at Mosque, will generate annual rental income from students upon completion, with the proceeds dedicated to the mosque’s maintenance and upkeep. Secretary of the Board of Trustees of the mosque, Alhaji Shehu AbdulGafar, disclosed Dangote’s takeover of the hostel project at a news conference in Ilorin recently.
He said the committee had already signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Ilorin on the project. The mosque, he said, would own and manage the hostel for 21 years, after which ownership would revert to UNILORIN.
AbdulGafar said that, in addition to sponsoring the project, Dangote had also pledged a monthly donation of N5 million to support the mosque’s regular maintenance until the hostel project was fully completed. Construction already started in August.
