The Ebonyi State government has banned graduation ceremonies for nursery and primary school pupils, compulsory after-school lessons, and the practice of writing inside textbooks across schools in the state.
Education commissioner Donatus Ilang announced the directives in a memo to principals, teachers, proprietors, and parents. He warned that any school found violating the rules would face sanctions.
According to the new policy, graduation events will only be allowed for students completing Junior Secondary School (JSS3) and Senior Secondary School (SS3). The government said the move was part of reforms under Governor Francis Nwifuru’s “Charter of Needs” agenda to improve education standards.
Other measures include the closure of unapproved private and faith-based schools, compulsory use of government-approved textbooks for four years, and a ban on grading students by class position, except for first, second, and third place.
The state has also introduced entrepreneurship and skill acquisition as compulsory subjects, with certificates to be awarded on graduation.
Ilang said the reforms were intended to ensure affordability, standardisation, and sustainability across the education system.
