The Ekiti State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) says it is broadening access to basic education for children with special needs as part of efforts to meet global targets for inclusive learning.
Executive Secretary, Professor Femi Sunday Akinwumi, told participants at a workshop in Ado-Ekiti that achieving Sustainable Development Goal 4 on inclusive and equitable education by 2030 requires greater investment in special needs provision.
The three-day training, held from August 11 to 13 in collaboration with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), brought together 90 teachers from special schools across Ekiti State. It was facilitated by the National Institute for Educational Planning and Administration (NIEPA), Ondo.
Professor Akinwumi commended Governor Biodun Oyebanji’s commitment to education and described NIEPA as a leading institution for building capacity in the sector. Officials said the workshop equipped teachers with practical skills in inclusive education, including recognising categories of special needs, applying Universal Design for Learning, and developing inclusive lesson plans.
Mrs Emmanuel Emily, SUBEB’s Director of Teacher Professional Development, said the initiative would strengthen the state’s basic education sector.
