Expert Warns Smokers Against Cardiac Arrest

Prof. Eyo Ekpe, a cardiothoracic surgeon at the University of Uyo, has warned cigarette smokers and diabetes patients to take care of their hearts to avoid sudden cardiac arrest.

Speaking at the university’s 117th inaugural lecture, he said conditions like diabetes and smoking trigger abnormal heart rhythms, known as arrhythmias, which can lead to sudden death. Prof. Ekpe warned that chest pain should never be taken lightly, as seeking medical help early allows doctors to identify and treat the underlying problem promptly.

He advised Nigerians to stay away from smoking and alcohol, keep blood pressure, diabetes, and cholesterol under control, exercise regularly, and manage stress to keep the heart healthy. He also urged that anyone with chest issues should only see qualified doctors to avoid a wrong diagnosis and serious complications.

He emphasised that timely reporting of symptoms and regular health checks are vital to prevent heart attacks and improve survival outcomes.
