In a renewed bid to encourage research in Nigerian universities, the Federal Government has approved over ₦4.2 billion for 158 research projects across Nigerian tertiary institutions under the 2024 TETFund National Research Fund. Federal University of Technology, Minna (₦400 million), Ahmadu Bello University (₦359 million), and Federal University of Technology, Akure (₦341 million) are the primary beneficiaries.
Science, technology, agriculture, energy, health, and security. Approved topics include smart energy meters, which are some of the key areas of the project, AI-powered medical tools for the military, robotic weed control in farming, and low-cost housing materials. TETFund said the grants followed a strict screening process where 6,944 proposals were reviewed. In a separate move, the government also approved ₦15 billion to build 18 innovation and entrepreneurship hubs in universities across the country. These centres will include robotics, 3D printing, AI labs, and more. The initiative is part of President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda to boost innovation, jobs, and economic growth.
