The Federal Ministry of Education has partnered with Amazon Web Services (AWS) Academy to provide free digital training and certification in cloud computing and emerging technologies for Nigerian students and lecturers across tertiary institutions.
Under the agreement, certification costs will be fully covered—50 per cent by the Ministry and the other half by AWS, allowing participants to earn internationally recognised credentials at no cost. The initiative, which supports the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda and the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI), aims to equip students and educators with practical skills in areas such as machine learning, artificial intelligence, and cloud infrastructure.
Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Olatunji Alausa, described the programme as a transformative step towards closing Nigeria’s digital skills gap and preparing graduates for the demands of a global workforce. “This partnership marks a turning point for digital education in Nigeria. It opens the door for thousands of our students and lecturers to access cutting-edge training that would otherwise be out of reach,” he said.
The project’s pilot phase has already onboarded coordinators from 43 federal universities and polytechnics. The Ministry is now expanding the programme to include state and private tertiary institutions, as well as colleges of education.
Institutional heads have been directed to nominate coordinators who will facilitate the onboarding of lecturers and students into the programme. Registration is ongoing through a dedicated portal on the Ministry’s website. The second phase of onboarding is expected to begin in the coming weeks. The Ministry is urging all eligible institutions to act swiftly to benefit from what it describes as a significant leap forward for skill-based education in Nigeria.
