The federal government has allocated ₦300 billion to ensure an uninterrupted electricity supply to teaching hospitals and universities nationwide.
Abubakar Bichi, chairman of the House Committee on Appropriation, announced this on Wednesday at the unveiling of a solar hybrid project at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH).
He said the initiative was part of President Bola Tinubu’s plan to tackle recurring power shortages in critical sectors, with renewable energy systems to be installed in selected institutions. “This intervention is designed to guarantee uninterrupted power so that doctors can save lives and students can study without disruption,” Mr Bichi said.
He explained that the move would reduce high electricity costs, boost efficiency, and encourage the use of clean energy. AKTH will receive between 6 and 7MW of solar power, while Bayero University Kano will get up to 6MW. State-owned hospitals in Kano will also benefit due to the state’s large population.
Bichi added that AKTH alone had ₦26bn allocated in the 2025 budget for new medical facilities. The hospital’s chief medical director, Abdulrahman Sheshe, praised the intervention, saying it would significantly improve service delivery.
