Following its commitment to making education more accessible and practical, the Federal Government of Nigeria has announced a revised cap on subjects for primary and secondary school pupils.
This is according to a statement by the Ministry of Education on August 31. The review process was not solely focused on reducing the number of subjects offered at various levels, but also on improving the content to foster more meaningful learning experiences for pupils and students.
Subjects’ limit for primary school pupils. Under the new guidelines, pupils in Primary one to three are now expected to offer a minimum of nine and a maximum of 10 subjects. For those in Primary four to six, the range has been set between 10 and 12 subjects.
At the Junior Secondary School level, students will be permitted to offer between 12 and 14 subjects. Meanwhile, Senior Secondary School students are expected to take between eight and nine subjects, while technical schools take between nine and 11. The ministry stated that this adjustment was designed to ensure that learners are not overwhelmed, while still receiving a broad and balanced education.
