Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has directed the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) to ensure that the student loan programme lasts for many years. The programme, which offers interest-free loans to Nigerian students, is seen as a significant step toward improving access to higher education.
Speaking in Abuja, NELFUND’s Managing Director, Mr. Akintunde Sawyerr, described the initiative as a “revolution” in Nigeria’s education sector. He said it is not just about paying school fees, but about creating a lasting legacy that supports national growth and development. Mr. Sawyerr called on all Nigerians, regardless of political or social background, to support the programme. He also encouraged private companies, philanthropists, and donors to partner with the government in funding the scheme.
The NELFUND boss assured the public that NELFUND is committed to transparency and integrity, and that its success depends on public trust and private sector involvement. The goal is to help more students get a quality education.
