FG deploys 240 solar-powered tricycles to 12 universities
The Federal Government has launched the Renewed Hope Campus Transport Scheme, deploying 240 solar-powered electric tricycles across 12 federal universities in all six geopolitical zones. The initiative, aimed at safer, greener, and affordable student mobility, also includes solar charging stations at each campus.
Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, said the programme reflects President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to youth welfare. Each university’s student union will manage the tricycles, ensuring direct student ownership. Beneficiaries in the first phase include UNILAG, UI, UNN, FUTO, UNIBEN, UNIUYO, UNIABUJA, FUTMINNA, UNIMAID, MAUTECH, ABU Zaria, and BUK.
The Minister also announced related interventions, including conversion kits under the Presidential CNG Initiative and an 11MW solar mini-grid at UNILAG. UNILAG Vice Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, described the launch as a milestone in the university’s green mobility transition, projecting over 120 metric tons of CO₂ reduction by year-end.
In a separate visit, Alausa oversaw the nationwide Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) initiative, which targets 960,000 youth.
The programme, funded by the government, offers training in 28 skill areas, post-training starter packs, and monthly stipends, aiming to produce micro, small, and medium entrepreneurs.
