Media for Change Bootcamp organised by Caleb University’s Centre for Media and Communication Innovations (CMCI)
Media experts have urged young people to use communication skills to drive social change at the Media for Change Bootcamp organised by Caleb University’s Centre for Media and Communication Innovations (CMCI) in Imota, Lagos.
The bootcamp, themed “Empowering youth for creative expression of talent,” engaged 50 participants aged 15-30 in hands-on sessions on ethical media practices, storytelling, skit creation, and participatory theatre. Activities included discussions on responsible media use, fact-checking, combating misinformation, privacy protection, and respectful online communication.
Journalist Christiana Alabi-Akande highlighted skit-making as “activism through storytelling,” while media scholar Olatunji Ololade guided participants on verifying information and promoting civility in digital spaces.
Storytelling sessions empowered youths to craft personal and community narratives, using audio-visual and written media to advocate for social issues.
Participatory theatre enabled participants to dramatise community challenges and co-create solutions, fostering empathy, critical thinking, and collaboration.
The bootcamp brought together youths from diverse backgrounds, supported by university officials, local leaders, civil society representatives, and media professionals, aiming to nurture ethically conscious and socially engaged communicators.
