In a landmark move to bridge the gap between education and sports in Nigeria, the Federal Government has inaugurated a joint committee tasked with developing a national framework for sports development across primary, secondary, and tertiary institutions.
The committee includes Hon. Adeyinka Adeboye, Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Grassroots Sports Development, who will serve as a key member.
The task force is to be co-chaired by the Minister of Education, Dr Morufu Olatunji Alausa, and the chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Shehu Dikko.
Describing the initiative as a defining moment for grassroots sports in Nigeria, Adeboye, a long-time advocate for youth development through athletics, stated that the framework aims to ensure every pupil and student, whether in primary school or at university, has the opportunity to identify and develop their sporting talents.
The committee will also be responsible for the reorganisation of major student tournaments, including the Nigeria University Games Association (NUGA) and the Nigeria Polytechnics Games Association (NIPOGA), to position them as platforms for talent discovery and development for both national and international competitions.
The initiative forms part of President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises youth empowerment, educational reform, and economic growth through sports.
Adeboye, who also serves as chairman of Smart City F.C., is expected to contribute valuable grassroots experience and practical insight to the committee’s work.
The collaboration between the NSC and the Federal Ministry of Education signals a renewed commitment to transforming Nigerian schools into hubs for nurturing future Olympians, professional athletes, and well-rounded citizens.
