The First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has donated N100 million to support the Five Cowries Art Education Initiative, an organisation committed to advancing arts education and expanding learning access in Nigeria’s underserved communities.
She announced in Abuja during a Charity Gala Dinner organised by the Spouses of Heads of Mission in Nigeria, in aid of the initiative.
Commending the group for their commitment to supporting vulnerable members of society, the First Lady said such innovations are essential for making meaningful and lasting impacts in critical sectors.
“It takes such innovations to make lasting impacts in critical sectors of society,” she said. “I also commend the vision and innovation behind the Five Cowries Art Education Initiative and applaud its founder, Ms Polly Alakija, for her dedication.”
Senator Tinubu noted that education is a fundamental pillar of national development, highlighting the efforts of the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) and President Bola Tinubu’s administration in promoting education and youth empowerment.
“I believe that education is a foundation of true national development. That is why the administration of President Bola Tinubu, since inception, and the Renewed Hope Initiative, since 2023, have continually contributed toward education and youth empowerment,” she stated.
She urged the public and stakeholders to support the Five Cowries Initiative through financial contributions, advocacy, or strategic partnerships.
“On behalf of RHI, we pledge N100 million to support 5,000 arts exhibitions in Nigeria,” she announced.
Speaking on behalf of the organisers, Mrs Lucrecia Downer, spouse of the High Commissioner of Jamaica, said the event aimed to raise funds to strengthen art education and promote creative expression across the country.
Earlier, Ms Polly Alakija, founder of the Five Cowries Art Education Initiative, outlined plans to expand the reach of arts education across Africa.
