In January 2022, a young man selling bottled water in Lagos traffic did something unusual. Instead of holding tightly to the little money he made, he gave some to inmates being transported in a Correctional Service bus. That small act of kindness changed his life forever.
The hawker, now known to many Nigerians as Ekuma Jeremiah, became an internet sensation. His story went viral, reaching the eyes of billionaire businessman Obi Cubana, who later promised to sponsor his university education.
Three years later, Jeremiah graduated from the Faculty of Law at Ebonyi State University. Moreover, while many celebrate his achievement, what truly stands out is the decision he made at a critical moment: he turned down immediate offers of cash and comfort to go back to school.
In a country where quick money often tempts young people, Jeremiah chose the harder but surer road—education. Obi Cubana, in a moving Instagram post, praised this decision:
“On January 19 2022, when the offers were placed before you, you chose education! You made the best choice. Today, you are a 2025 law graduate. You could have taken the money and walked away to temporary comfort, but you were wise.”
Cubana’s words capture the heart of the matter. Jeremiah’s story is not just about one man’s success. It is a lesson in patience, discipline, and vision.
A Role Model for His Generation
For many young people, especially in the Southeast, where Jeremiah hails from, his journey serves as a reminder that education remains the key to long-term success.
Dr Ifeoma Nwankwo, an education consultant, told our reporter that Jeremiah’s choice reflects “rare wisdom in an age when too many youths are pressured to chase quick money.” She added, “He shows that even when life puts you on the street, you can rise with education. That is the message our children need to see.”
Parents, too, are drawing lessons. Mrs Ngozi Eze, a mother of three in Enugu, said Jeremiah’s graduation gave her renewed hope. “Sometimes my children complain that school is a waste of time because of unemployment. However, when I showed them Jeremiah’s story, they agreed that education gives you respect and open doors that money alone cannot buy.”
The Bigger Picture
Nigeria is a country battling youth unemployment and poverty, where hawking on the street is often the only option for survival. Experts say Jeremiah’s story sheds light on the role of private citizens, such as Obi Cubana, who stepped in to provide support.
Public affairs analyst, Mr Chidi Anene, noted: “We cannot wait for government alone. This partnership between individuals with resources and young talents with determination is how societies grow.”
A Future to Watch
For Jeremiah, the journey is only beginning. As Cubana himself put it: “The bigger job is ahead of us. Jerry MUST be successful.”
Nevertheless, his story has already become a beacon of hope. From a Lagos hawker to a law graduate, Jeremiah stands today as proof that when a young man chooses education over short-term comfort, he not only changes his own life—he inspires a generation.
