The Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Professor Babatunde Kehinde and Other Personnel

The Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Professor Babatunde Kehinde, has reaffirmed the university’s strong commitment to campus safety as the institution launches its new Bio-Risk Management Policy.

At the official launch of the policy, the Vice-Chancellor thanked the team that worked on it for their excellent work. He said the policy is not just about writing something on paper but a crucial plan to help keep everyone on campus safe, including students, staff, researchers, and visitors.

Professor Kehinde said the policy is FUNAAB’s way of preparing for any potential dangers that may arise from working with biological materials. He said it would help ensure that everyone at the university is more careful and follows safety rules, especially when conducting research or other schoolwork.

Professor Adebayo Akinloye, Chairman of the committee, stated that the policy focuses on identifying dangers, assessing risks, mitigating those risks, and raising awareness through training. He explained that with research becoming more complicated, it is necessary to have a clear and organised safety plan.

Dr Mike Agbaje, who presented the policy document, explained that the policy outlines procedures for identifying hazards, handling hazardous materials, disposing of waste properly, and responding to emergencies. He also stated that everyone, from top officials to students and visitors, must collaborate to maintain the university’s safety.

The policy adheres to safety guidelines established by international bodies, including the World Health Organisation (WHO) and Nigeria’s Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA). This demonstrates that FUNAAB is committed to doing things the right way and adhering to global safety standards. By launching this new policy, FUNAAB is demonstrating its commitment to safety and ensuring that both learning and research are conducted in a clean and secure environment.
