The Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) is set to host the 2025 edition of the International Society for Neurochemistry (ISN) Neuroscience School from October 19 to 24, 2025. Themed “Building Research Capacity in the Use of Alternative Experimental Models for Promoting the 3Rs in Neuroscience Research in Africa,” the weeklong training aims to equip postgraduate and early-career researchers across Africa with practical skills in neurochemistry research using non-traditional models such as the fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster), roundworm (Caenorhabditis elegans), cockroach (Nauphoeta cinerea), and neuronal cell lines.
The ISN-sponsored school will focus on advancing the principles of Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement (3Rs) in neuroscience by promoting ethical, cost-effective, and scalable alternatives to the use of vertebrate animals in testing. Participants will gain exposure to behavioural, biochemical, and molecular research methods relevant to understanding neurodegenerative diseases and neurological disorders. The programme targets Master’s, PhD, and early postdoctoral researchers in neuroscience and related fields, offering them training in both theory and practice. All travel, accommodation, and meal expenses for successful applicants will be fully covered. Dr O.B. Ogunsuyi of FUTA is coordinating the initiative to foster scientific collaboration and enhance the quality of neuroscience research in Africa.
