Medical experts have identified a concerning link between high-fat diets and brain atrophy, a condition characterised by the loss of neurons and connections between them. While brain atrophy can occur naturally with ageing, recent studies suggest that dietary habits, particularly high-fat consumption, may accelerate this process.
Research indicates that high-fat diets can lead to insulin resistance in the brain, where brain cells become less responsive to insulin. This resistance impairs the brain’s ability to utilise glucose effectively, depriving neurons of essential energy and nutrients. Over time, this glucose deprivation can cause neurons to shrink and die, contributing to brain atrophy.
Also, studies have shown that obesity and high-fat diets are associated with increased neuroinflammation and oxidative stress, both of which can damage brain tissue and exacerbate cognitive decline. Therefore, experts recommend a balanced diet rich in whole foods, such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, to support brain health.
Reducing the intake of saturated fats and processed foods may help prevent insulin resistance and protect against brain atrophy.
