IITA-CGIAR, CABI, and ISRIC Hold Workshop

Participants

The IITA-CGIAR has partnered with the Centre for Agriculture and Bioscience International (CABI) and International Soil Reference and Information Centre (ISRIC) to host a three-day workshop to develop a solution to strengthen soil formation management and soil health in the country.

The workshop also focused on providing farmers, extension agents, and decision-makers with real-time guidance.

Dr Bernard Vanlauwe, the IITA Deputy Director General for Research and Development, explained at the event that soil data is essential for food security and for supporting farmers.

He added that the soil information system (SIS) can help farmers and advisors access location-specific soil data to choose the right fertiliser type, manage soil health, and improve crop yields.

According to Vanlauwe, the SIS is both a technical exercise and an investment in Nigeria’s food culture.
