The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has cautioned tertiary institutions against manipulating the merit-based admission process by coercing candidates to switch programmes through unofficial channels.
In a statement by its spokesperson, Fabian Benjamin, JAMB said it had received reports that some institutions were using internal portals to pressure high-ranking candidates on the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS) to move from competitive programmes to less-subscribed ones.
JAMB described the act as an attempt to manipulate the ranking process and undermine fairness, transparency, and merit in the admissions process. It reiterated that all legitimate admission activities must be conducted exclusively through CAPS, stressing that any programme change done outside the platform is unauthorised and unethical.
The Board warned that such backdoor manoeuvres would attract sanctions and advised candidates to ignore any requests from institutions to alter their programme choices through internal portals.
Preliminary investigations revealed that a university in the South-West and another in Abuja were involved in the malpractice. JAMB stated that it had initiated regulatory actions to address the violations and protect the interests of candidates.
