Kogi State University, Kabba, is fast changing the face of education in Okun land, the Western senatorial district of Kogi State. For more than 60 years, the people of the area had prayed and pushed for a university of their own, despite being renowned for producing brilliant students.
That long dream finally became reality in June 2023 when the school was established by former Governor Yahaya Bello. It was quickly nicknamed Pajawiri University — a word that means “emergency” in the local language — because of how fast it was set up before the 2023 elections. Despite that, the people happily accepted it and gave their full support, making sure it started smoothly with academic activities kicking off in 2024.
The university is now giving young people in Okun land easier access to higher education, without the stress of travelling far. It is also expected to bring more development to the area and make education available to future generations.
