The Federal Ministry of Education has confirmed that the last binding agreement between the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) was signed in 2009.
In a statement released on its official X handle, the ministry explained that the clarification followed recent comments by Education Minister, Dr. Tunji Alausa, on efforts to end the 16-year deadlock with ASUU. It stressed that while a draft agreement was produced by the Nimi Briggs-led renegotiation committee in 2021, it was never signed by the government.
The ministry said Dr. Alausa’s remarks about “no new signed agreement” explicitly referred to that unsigned draft. It added that although the Briggs draft serves as a framework for discussions, the 2009 agreement remains the latest legally binding document.
The government reiterated its commitment to resolving the ASUU impasse sustainably and constitutionally, assuring that universities will remain open for teaching and research.
