A Higher National Diploma (HND) student at Kwara State Polytechnic in Ilorin, Adekanye Ayomide Elizabeth, has expressed frustration after her department suddenly changed her course of study.
In an emotional Facebook post on Monday, Elizabeth revealed that students enrolled in the Journalism and Media Studies programme were unexpectedly required to switch to Strategic Communication, even though they had completed the first semester of their final year.
Elizabeth, who was preparing to graduate, said students had already attended lectures, written examinations, and purchased textbooks, only to be informed that the course would be merged with another.
She condemned the decision, calling it unfair and demoralising.
“We chose journalism because of our passion for storytelling and the truth. Due to politics and manipulation, our future is being affected,” Elizabeth wrote, pleading for the Management of the Polytechnic, the Federal Ministry of Education, and the media to step in and address the situation.
Her post quickly went viral, sparking outrage on social media. Many users supported Elizabeth and criticised the department for the abrupt change.
Elizabeth also stated that the students were committed to their chosen field and refused to accept Strategic Communication as a replacement for Journalism.
Attempts to reach the school’s Management for comment were unsuccessful, and the Department of Mass Communication President could not be contacted.
