The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called an emergency meeting of all unions in the public tertiary education sector following the Academic Staff Union of Universities’ (ASUU) ongoing two-week warning strike.
In a statement on Tuesday, NLC President Joe Ajaero said the meeting, scheduled for Monday, October 20, 2025, at the NLC Headquarters in Abuja, aims to coordinate a joint labour response and press the Federal Government to meet ASUU’s demands.
Unions expected at the meeting include the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), and National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT).
In addition, Ajaero criticised government threats of “No Work, No Pay,” stressing that such tactics cannot resolve long-standing grievances. He urged unions to adopt a united front to protect workers’ rights and the integrity of Nigeria’s higher education system.
Recall that ASUU had rejected government offers of N50bn for earned allowances and N150bn for needs assessment, describing them as inadequate.
The strike has brought academic activities across federal universities in the country to a halt, with students being the major hit as they see their colleagues in private universities continue their studies without hitches.
