The Lagos State Government has launched a comprehensive needs assessment of its public schools to inform reforms and enhance learning standards.
The six-week exercise, unveiled on Thursday at the State Universal Basic Education Board headquarters in Maryland, will cover 1,284 schools, vocational centres and local education offices across both riverine and upland areas. More than 200 trained assessors have been deployed for surveys, site inspections and weekly reviews.
Officials said the initiative is aimed at collecting accurate data to shape decisions on infrastructure, teacher training and curriculum support. Dr Hakeem Shittu, a senior education official, described it as “a strategic step towards evidence-based planning” that would deliver both immediate and long-term benefits.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s aide on project monitoring, Oluwasegun Sanwo-Olu, added that the findings would undergo strict verification before being submitted to the governor for policy action. He said the goal was to provide a development plan that future administrations could rely on.
Education stakeholders, including teachers and administrators, were urged to cooperate fully. Authorities say technology tools will be used to ensure accuracy, positioning Lagos as a model for data-driven education reform in Nigeria.
