Teachers in Lagos State have called on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to implement the 65-year or 40-year service retirement policy for educators in the state.
The appeal was made by the State Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Hassan Mujeeb, during the 2025 World Teachers’ Day celebration, held on Sunday at the NUT Pavilion in Alausa, Ikeja.
Mujeeb said adopting the federal policy, already passed into law by the National Assembly and signed by former President Muhammadu Buhari, would help retain experienced teachers and improve educational standards in the state.
He urged Governor Sanwo-Olu to emulate other states, such as Delta, that have already implemented the policy, adding that it would demonstrate Lagos’s commitment to fairness and the recognition of teachers’ service.
The NUT chairman also highlighted recent achievements by Lagos teachers, including Mrs Adeola Adefemi, named Africa’s Best Teacher in 2024, and Mrs Salamatu Sule, who received the same honour in 2025.
Responding on behalf of the governor, Secretary to the State Government Bimbola Saludeen said teachers’ concerns would be presented to the governor for consideration. She described teachers as “destiny shapers” and assured them of continued government support.
Head of Service Olabode Agoro also reaffirmed that teachers’ welfare remains a government priority, noting that salaries will continue to be paid promptly.
This year’s World Teachers’ Day, themed “Recasting Teaching as a Collaborative Profession,” featured lectures, awards, and cultural performances celebrating teachers’ contributions to education and community development.
