The Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB) has celebrated teachers and education workers who have reached the age of 70, describing them as pillars of wisdom who helped shape basic education in the state.
At an event in Maryland, Lagos, the retirees were honoured with tributes, music and gifts in recognition of decades of service. LASUBEB Chairman, Dr Hakeem Shittu, praised their resilience and sacrifice, saying their work had laid the foundation for generations of pupils.
However, while the event was marked by nostalgia and celebration, pensioners also used the occasion to raise concerns over their welfare. Speaking on their behalf, Mr Balogun Shefiu, Chairman of the Nigerian Pensioners, Lagos State Chapter, thanked Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for recognising senior citizens but appealed for the payment of arrears and additional palliatives to cushion economic hardship.
Board member, Mr Owolabi Jamiu Falana, noted that each retiree had devoted over 35 years of service to the state, describing them as role models for younger educators. The gathering highlighted both the enduring legacy of veteran teachers and the continuing challenges facing retired public servants.
