Academic activities at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Medical School have been halted following an indefinite strike by members of the Nigerian Association of Medical and Dental Academics (NAMDA).
The LAUTECH chapter of the union began the strike on August 1 after accusing the university management of failing to implement the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) and pay arrears dating back to January 2025. In a letter to the vice chancellor, signed by acting chairman Prof Michael Olamoyegun and acting secretary Dr Abraham Alabi, the lecturers said repeated appeals, a 14-day ultimatum and negotiations had failed to resolve the issue. They said July salaries were paid without the agreed CONMESS adjustment, showing management’s “unwillingness” to settle the dispute.
The action affects all academic work, including lectures, ward rounds, tutorials, examinations, and committee duties across the Faculties of Basic Medical, Basic Clinical and Clinical Sciences. NAMDA stressed the strike is directed at the university and not the LAUTECH Teaching Hospital. The union said it had shown restraint for over a year but was forced to act due to “continued neglect” from the authorities.
