Lokoja University Opens Centre on Climate Change

The Federal University Lokoja has launched an International Centre for Climate Change, Flood and Environmental Sustainability to address the rising threats of flooding and environmental degradation in Nigeria.

Speaking at the inauguration, Vice Chancellor Prof. Olayemi Akinwumi said Lokoja, located at the confluence of Rivers Niger and Benue, has suffered severe floods over the years, making the centre a necessary response.

He explained that the centre would not just be limited to conducting research but would also equally provide solutions and policies to help communities adapt to climate challenges. Speaking further, he said that the centre will also serve as a hub for collaboration among experts, offering evidence-based strategies and community-driven interventions.

Prof. Akinwumi said that the project will give hope and innovation, aimed at safeguarding lives, protecting livelihoods, and ensuring sustainability for future generations. The initiative is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s fight against the devastating impacts of climate change and position Lokoja as a leader in environmental research.
