The pioneer Rector of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY), Abeokuta, Dr Tunji Sonola, has said his long-held vision was for the institution to evolve into a university.
Speaking during a courtesy visit to the campus, Dr Sonola said the ambition shaped early decisions, including the acquisition of the large expanse of land the polytechnic occupies today. He praised the institution’s community and urged staff and students to remain united and open-minded in supporting current efforts to reposition and rebrand MAPOLY in line with the founders’ dreams.
The current Rector, Arc Dr Koye Jolaoso, welcomed the former head and described him as a visionary leader whose tenure laid a strong foundation for manpower development. He recalled that Dr Sonola both employed him in the polytechnic system and admitted him as an architecture student in 1983.
Dr Sonola was taken on a tour of key facilities, including the MAPOLY Radio studios, where he featured on a live programme, and the polytechnic library, one of the projects executed during his tenure between 1978 and 1984.
Staff and students gave the former rector a warm reception, with other principal officers of the institution in attendance.
