Students of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY), Abeokuta, have raised concerns over the growing pressures of financial hardship, academic demands, and the emotional toll of survival on campus life.
A recent report reveals that several students are lamenting the impact of rising costs of transportation, food, and study materials.
They explained that allowances from home are often inadequate, forcing many into debt or extreme measures. “Most times, the money sent from home finishes quickly. Before the week ends, we are already broke,” an ND 2 student in Mechanical Engineering said. Others admitted to trekking long distances to save transport costs or skipping meals to cope. “We spend more on transportation and feeding than we can afford,” another student explained.
Beyond financial struggles, students pointed to the academic pressure of deadlines and the fear of carryovers as significant concerns. “Imagine you are battling hunger, then one lecturer starts threatening carryover. It makes life very hard for us,” a female student complained.
To survive, many have turned to side hustles, including selling snacks, thrift items, or data subscriptions on and off campus.
