MeDSABAMS Suspends UNIUYO Branch Chair Over Court Action

Medical and Dental Specialists Association in Basic Medical Sciences (MeDSABAMS).

The Medical and Dental Specialists Association in Basic Medical Sciences (MeDSABAMS) has suspended the Chair of its University of Uyo branch, Dr Ekemini Johnson, for taking the association to court without first exploring its internal dispute-resolution procedures.

The decision was announced in a communiqué signed by the National President, Dr John Anionye, and the National Secretary-General, Dr Tasiu Ibrahim, and released to journalists on Saturday at the end of the association’s 5th Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference in Uyo.

MeDSABAMS said Dr Johnson had been directed by the National Officers Committee to step aside after verification that she was on a three-year study leave from 2024 to 2027.

Instead, she reportedly sought a court injunction to stop the AGM from holding in Uyo, a move the association said could have disrupted activities and affected members from across the country.
According to the communiqué, the suspension will remain in place until Dr Johnson withdraws the case from court and tenders an unreserved apology.

The conference also called for a comprehensive review of Nigeria’s medical education curriculum and urged the government to improve welfare and facilities for trainers. It backed ongoing negotiations by the NMA and NAMDA on better remuneration. It pressed for the universal application of CONMESS and new welfare packages to curb internal and external brain drain in the sector.
