The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has addressed concerns over reports that all graduating students at Rivers State University (RSU), Port Harcourt, would be required to pay ₦220,000 as convocation fees.
In a statement released on Friday, September 26, 2025, NANS President Comrade Olushola Oladoja announced that the association had investigated the matter following widespread complaints. He confirmed that the University Registrar, Mrs Ibimonia B.S. Harry, clarified in an official memo that the ₦220,000 fee applies only to PhD graduands and covers the cost of the convocation gown, which will remain the property of the recipient.
Other approved convocation fees for RSU’s 37th and 38th combined ceremonies are ₦97,000 for Bachelor’s degrees, ₦145,000 for Master’s degrees and Postgraduate Diplomas, and ₦68,000 for Professional and Certificate programmes.
Oladoja assured students that NANS will continue to engage with RSU management to ensure transparency and fairness, urging them to remain calm and law-abiding. He reaffirmed NANS’s commitment to defending students nationwide against arbitrary fees and unfair practices.
