A recent investigation into TETFund projects across Nigerian universities and polytechnics has revealed a pattern of prolonged delays, abandonment, and poor accountability, raising concerns about the effectiveness of federal intervention funds.
At Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED), projects allocated as far back as 2014 remained untouched for years, resurfacing only in 2025, despite funds being signed off in 2019. When approached for comment, the university declined to provide explanations, citing that only key officials and TETFund could respond.
Similar delays were observed nationwide. At the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) and Ekiti State University (EKSU), infrastructure projects for lecture halls and laboratories remained incomplete for years, affecting both teaching and research. At the University of Abuja, TETFund-funded buildings took nearly a decade from allocation to delivery, leaving generations of students to study under inadequate conditions.
Even established institutions such as Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) and the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) have experienced stalled projects, ranging from hostels to science facilities, which have undermined their academic capacity. Polytechnics, including those in Ibadan, Kwara, and Offa, shared similar frustrations, highlighting the interruption of library and hostel construction.
The recurring theme is a lack of transparency and accountability. Students, staff, and stakeholders report that management often evades questions, while TETFund provides little public explanation. The result is overcrowded classrooms, outdated labs, and delayed facilities, despite millions of naira allocated for improvements.
Unless institutional oversight and public accountability improve, the promise of TETFund as a driver of Nigeria’s tertiary education development remains unfulfilled, leaving students to bear the consequences.
