NAS Ex-President Calls for Community Engagement

Prof. Ekanem Braide, the immediate past president of the Nigerian Academy of Science (NAS), has encouraged universities to make positive contributions to the communities in which they are situated.

While delivering a lecture titled “The Nigerian University in the 21st Century: Engine of Knowledge, Driver of Development” at the 20th Convocation Lecture of Bowen University, Iwo, Osun State, she mentioned that “Universities should upscale community service. If a university exists in a location and that location remains unchanged, then the university has not fulfilled its mandate. A university should solve some of the cross-cutting problems of its host community.”

Braide noted that universities can only fulfil their plans of teaching, learning, and community service if they align their approaches with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
