National Board for Technical Education (NBTE)
The National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) has announced significant reforms in Nigeria’s Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) sector, following approval from the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa.
The National Innovation Diploma (NID) programme has been discontinued, effective immediately, to harmonise the National Diploma (ND) framework nationwide. Institutions currently running NID may graduate Year II students, while Year I students can complete NID or switch to the ND equivalent. The Innovation Enterprise Institutions (IEIs) category has also been abolished.
Additionally, 46 IEIs with valid accreditation have been upgraded to National Diploma-awarding status to strengthen and streamline the TVET system. JAMB has been notified to facilitate a smooth transition for admissions.
Conversely, operational licenses of 136 institutions with lapsed accreditation have been revoked. These institutions will be delisted from the JAMB portal but may continue to operate as sub-tertiary schools if they meet the regulatory requirements.
The NBTE emphasised that these reforms aim to enhance quality assurance, institutional compliance, and access to credible technical education, marking a significant step toward a globally competitive TVET system in Nigeria.
