The National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) has closed 22 unlicensed Colleges of Education operating in different parts of Nigeria, the commission said in its latest performance report.
The institutions were identified during a nationwide crackdown targeting schools awarding certificates without proper accreditation. The NCCE described the move as essential to protect the integrity of the country’s education system.
The report also highlighted reforms across all 21 federal Colleges of Education, including personnel audits and financial monitoring, aimed at ensuring accountability and improving the management of teacher education.
The action follows President Bola Tinubu’s directive for regulatory agencies, including the NUC, NBTE, and NCCE, to intensify efforts against “certificate millers” and unaccredited institutions. Speaking at the National Open University of Nigeria’s 14th convocation in Abuja, a representative of the President described such colleges as undermining national education standards and vowed to strengthen collaboration among regulatory bodies to prevent academic fraud. Education stakeholders welcomed the crackdown, urging authorities to prosecute operators to deter future violations and restore confidence in Nigeria’s tertiary education system.
