The Akwa Ibom State Executive Council has approved the upgrade of the College of Education, Afaha Nsit, to the Akwa Ibom State University of Education, as part of sweeping sectoral reforms aimed at strengthening teacher training, professional development, and human capital growth in the state.
Governor Umo Eno, who presided over the meeting, said the decision aligns with the state’s ARISE Agenda, which prioritises education as the cornerstone of socio-economic transformation. He emphasised that the new university will produce highly skilled teachers capable of driving innovation and quality learning outcomes across schools.
The Council also approved the formation of a special committee to realign ministerial responsibilities, aiming for more effective governance and collaboration in implementing the education reforms.
In the same session, the Council ratified memos related to ongoing infrastructure projects. It reaffirmed the state’s commitment to aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda for inclusive growth and capacity development.
Governor Eno said the move marks “a new era for teacher education in Akwa Ibom,” adding that “no society can rise above the quality of its teachers.”
