The withdrawal of U.S. support in northeast Nigeria is now threatening the survival of a school catering to children affected by the Boko Haram insurgency.
The Islamist group, which has waged violence since 2009 in a bid to impose Islamic law, forbids Western education and gained notoriety following the 2014 abduction of schoolgirls in Chibok.
According to reports, recent funding cuts by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) have forced the school to release about 700 students and 20 teachers.
Advocates warn that the setback could deepen the vulnerability of children already displaced or orphaned by conflict, throwing away years of recovery efforts in the region.
