The National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) has said the ₦20,000 annual uniform allowance given to nurses is not enough. They are calling for significant changes, including the creation of a Directorate of Nursing Services at the Federal Ministry of Health, to be led by a registered nurse.
The statement was made during a national examiners workshop held in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, which is also the Southeast zone’s host for the ongoing seven-day warning strike by nurses. Speaking at the event, NANNM Ebonyi State Chairman, Comrade Obasi Chukwu, praised the state government for upgrading its School of Nursing and building a ₦500 million student hostel.
While the training workshop continued, hospitals across Ebonyi—like the National Obstetric Fistula Centre and David Umahi Federal University Teaching Hospital—joined the strike in full. Chukwu said the strike was necessary because the Federal Government has failed to address nurses’ welfare and professional development concerns.
