The NYSC in Edo State, working with the Florish Foundation for Women and Youths, mobilised corps members for a voluntary blood donation exercise in Benin City to mark World Blood Donor Day and support patients in urgent need of transfusions, especially those with sickle cell disorder.
The drive, held at the Military Hospital, saw approximately 100 corps members donate blood alongside partners, including the National Blood Service Agency and Bright Path Development Hub.
Dr Frances Ben-Ushie, represented by Mrs Funmilayo Oluwatoyin, said the initiative showed the urgent need for safe blood. She described the act as a demonstration of compassion and national service.
Brig.-Gen. Paulina Aburime, Commander of the Military Hospital, commended the turnout, stressing that consistent public participation in blood donation would save many lives, including women in childbirth and patients undergoing emergency surgeries.
Omotayo Adesuyi, speaking on behalf of the Florish Foundation, said that each pint collected could make a life-or-death difference for patients with sickle cell disease, accident victims, and mothers facing complications.
Dr Ikejiofor Prudence, serving at the Military Hospital and originator of the idea, noted that timely blood availability often determines whether a patient survives an emergency.
