The Ogun State Government has banned extravagant graduation parties in schools and introduced a six-year minimum cycle for textbook changes.
Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, announced the reforms while addressing preparations for the 2024/2025 academic session. He explained that the measures aim to reduce financial pressure on parents.
Under the new rules, graduation ceremonies will only be allowed in three key classes: Primary Six, Junior Secondary School Three (JSS3), and Senior Secondary School Three (SS3). Celebrations for nursery or other non-terminal classes are no longer permitted.
“Graduation events must reflect genuine academic milestones. Lavish celebrations for nursery or non-terminal classes are unnecessary and place undue financial pressure on parents,” Prof. Arigbabu said.
The commissioner also stated that textbooks must now be used for at least six years before schools can demand changes, a move designed to make education more affordable for families across the state.
