Social media influencer and education advocate Alex Onyia has criticised wealthy Nigerians for not doing enough to support young people, particularly students aspiring to study abroad.
Onyia, the CEO of Educare, an education technology platform, stated that the lack of scholarships and mentorship from privileged Nigerians contributes to the significant gap in educational attainment between Nigeria and developed countries.
In a post on X, Onyia noted that many universities in the UK and Europe have a significant number of Chinese and Indian students, often supported by scholarships. At the same time, few Nigerians benefit from such opportunities.
“There are lots of scholarships and funding opportunities, but it seems Nigerians are not taking advantage of these opportunities enough, and leaving it to other countries. Also, people in privileged positions are not helping others enough. Indians and Chinese do help many of their people,” Onyia wrote.
He added that the education quality gap between Nigeria and the West is “like 100 years apart,” emphasising the need for Nigerians to take advantage of available scholarship opportunities.
Onyia also disclosed that he would be visiting Canada to explore more opportunities for Nigerian students.
