Open and Distance Learning Breaks Barriers in Nigerian Education, Says NOUN Professor

Professor Helen Kwanashie of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) has stated that Open and Distance Learning (ODL) is helping to make education more accessible to a broader audience by overcoming geographical barriers.

She made the remarks during her valedictory lecture at NOUN’s headquarters in Abuja. The lecture was titled, “From chalkboards to digital networks: A career academic’s 44-year journey from face-to-face teaching through open and distance education to social learning.”

Professor Kwanashie discussed how technology has transformed education in Nigeria. She said, “The chalkboard was my first canvas, but digital networks have allowed me to reach students across Nigeria and beyond.”

She compared three learning methods: traditional face-to-face learning, Open and Distance Learning, and social learning. She pointed out the benefits and challenges of each.

“Face-to-face learning allows immediate interaction, but ODL makes education more open and accessible by removing location limits. Social learning uses technology and teamwork to create lively learning environments,” she explained.

Professor Kwanashie also raised concerns about gender equity in education. She called for changes to support women, especially those with young children, to improve their attendance and success in school.

“Supporting women in education means putting in place systems that understand their special needs,” she said. “This will help create an ‘open’ education system where technology and inclusion work together to make learning available to everyone.”

She also highlighted the growing role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education. AI can assist with student counselling and tailor learning content to meet individual needs, thereby improving student satisfaction with distance learning.

Looking ahead, Professor Kwanashie shared her plans after retirement. She wants to continue mentoring young teachers and explore how AI can better support students studying remotely.

The Vice Chancellor of NOUN, Professor Olufemi Peters, described her as a visionary tutor who has successfully bridged the gap between traditional teaching and modern digital education.

Professor Kwanashie’s lecture highlighted how Open and Distance Learning is transforming education in Nigeria by utilising technology to reach more students, regardless of their location.
