Former minister Professor Jerry Gana has warned that insecurity will persist in Nigeria unless the Federal Government strengthens the protection of the country’s borders.
Speaking in Abuja at an event marking the 2025 International Day of Peace and the 25th anniversary of the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR), Gana stated that peace could only be achieved through justice, equity, and fairness. He also cited the 2025 Global Peace Index, which estimated the global economic cost of violence at more than $19 trillion.
IPCR Director-General Joseph Ochogwu said collective action was needed to tackle threats such as violent extremism, economic inequality, climate-induced conflicts and divisive narratives on social media. He outlined the Institute’s work over the past 25 years, including grassroots mediation, national dialogues and the training of peacebuilders.
Delivering the keynote, Onyinye Onwuka described the world as increasingly fragile, warning that the window for action was narrow and that the cost of inaction was high.
The event also featured a peace walk, the release of doves and awards to peacebuilders, with participants urging urgent steps to build a safer and more peaceful society.
