Following several enquiries from parents and candidates over perceived discrepancies between academic results and post-UTME scores, the University of Abuja has issued a statement, clarifying its post-UTME grading system.
In a statement released by the Admissions Office, the institution explained that the grading process is not uniform, but rather depends on the relevance of each subject to the applicant’s chosen course of study.
“For instance, a candidate seeking admission into MBBS will have Biology given greater weight, while Economics carries no relevance for that course. Conversely, for a candidate applying for Economics or related programmes, Economics will be prioritised over Biology. Thus, even if two candidates have identical grades, the variation in subject relevance naturally leads to different post-UTME scores,” the statement read.
The university assured parents and prospective students that the admission process is transparent, credible, and aligned with established standards.
However, the clarification has raised mixed reactions from applicants and parents. On social media, some students criticised the approach, describing it as “a means of denying people opportunity,” and suggested that UNIABUJA should adopt a written post-UTME examination like other universities.
Meanwhile, another user pleaded with the university to refresh the post-UTME portal to accommodate candidates who recently uploaded their NECO results. “We know awaiting results was not allowed, but out of deep love and faith in this institution, we applied. Do not let our hope and future die at the gate of the school we revere most,” the post read.
