The National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN) on Thursday held its 43rd convocation at the college campus in Ijanikin, Lagos.
At a press conference on Wednesday ahead of the event, the President of the college, Dr Peter Ebeigbe, announced that the institution would confer awards on 480 distinguished professionals.
The recipients included 405 Fellows, 34 Doctor of Medicine awardees, 37 Diplomates in Family Medicine, four Distinguished Fellows, and four Postgraduate Diploma awardees in Anaesthesia and Public Health.
Ebeigbe noted that an analysis of the college’s yearly fellowship awards over the past decade showed a peak in 2019 and 2020, with 450 and 459 Fellows, respectively, following a steady rise from 343 and 340 in 2015 and 2016. According to him, the numbers declined to 310 in 2021, before rising again to 407 and 338 in 2023 and 2024.
“From the data available, while it is difficult to conclude that the steady drop caused by the ‘Japa syndrome’ has stopped, it appears that some stability in numbers may be setting in. This is most likely the result of multiple interventions implemented by the college and faculties to encourage the intake of trainees into our college without lowering standards,” he said.
The college also noted improvements in its digital infrastructure, stating that much of its administrative, monitoring, evaluation, and assessment processes were now being conducted in real time online.
