President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of new members to the Governing Council of the University of Abuja, completing the constitution of the external members of the council. The newly appointed council members include Professor Rosemary Iriowen Egonmwan (South-South), Dr Adedeji Adefuye (South-West), Professor Sarki Abba Abdulkadir (North-West), and Professor Aminu Mohammed Dukku (North-East).
This follows the earlier dissolution of the University’s Governing Council and the removal of its former Vice-Chancellor, Professor Aisha Sani Maikudi, on February 6, 2025. At that time, Dr Olanrewaju Tejuoso was appointed as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, while Professor Patricia Manko Lar was named Acting Vice-Chancellor.
According to a statement issued on May 27, 2025, by presidential spokesperson Mr Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu also approved appointments to the councils of two other institutions – the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) and Nnamdi Azikiwe University (NAU), Awka. For UNN, the new council members are Rt. Hon. Barrister Ogbonna Eugene Odo (South East) and Muhammad Inuwa Tahir (North West). For NAU, the appointees are Dr Nkem Okeke, Ofoke Chukwuma Charles Ugbala (both from South East), Dame Amina Patrick Yakowa (North West), and Nojeeb Oriola Agunbiade (South West).
In her reaction, Professor Patricia Manko Lar, Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University of Abuja, thanked President Tinubu for completing the council’s composition. She pledged to work closely with the new members, led by Dr Tejuoso, to drive the university’s vision and development goals. The move is seen as part of the Federal Government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen university governance and ensure better management in Nigeria’s higher education system.
