The newly elected student union leaders at Adeyemi Federal University of Education (AFUED), Ondo, have been charged to see their roles as a platform for responsibility, accountability, and positive leadership.
Vice-Chancellor, Professor Bayode Isaiah Popoola, addressed the Comrade James Friday-led executive during their inauguration, emphasising that student unionism should prioritise service, inclusivity, and the welfare of the wider student body. “Leadership is a noble call to responsibility. Engage constructively, listen attentively, and ensure every student feels seen and represented,” he said.
Popoola also highlighted the union’s strategic role in promoting peace, unity, and academic excellence, stressing that conduct that undermines the union’s dignity would not be tolerated.
In her remarks, the Dean of Student Affairs, Dr Justina Ogboru, urged the new leaders to focus on service rather than personal gain and commended outgoing president, Comrade Aniefiok Gideon, for his contributions.
The new administration promised to continue initiatives on academic welfare, social activities, and entrepreneurship, signalling a renewed focus on student empowerment.
The event, held at the Babatunde Ipaye Lecture Theatre, drew senior university officials, union leaders, staff, and students, highlighting the growing emphasis on accountable and transformative student governance in Nigerian universities.
